Del Rey gave away a bunch of Deathtroopers CDs this past weekend at the New York Comic Con. Early reports back from listeners has been quite positive. Here's what they're listening to:

Having never done anything like this before, I must say I enjoyed making a soundtrack for a work-in-progress. I'm finishing up my new YA novel Wakefield this week, and the soundtrack is coming along well, with music from Kings of Leon, The Decemberists and TV on the Radio, among others.

So, besides absolutely nothing, what exactly does a bunch of random songs have to do with a book that's not even out yet?
I guess I just don't get the point. Was it an excuse to plug the book while at the same time pick ten random bands to plug?
OKR:
Back at the end of September, when Joe still couldn't talk much about the book, he posted a playlist of the music that he listened to while writing it. Music sets a mood, so the playlist was sort of a vague hint of things to come.
Joe just did a publicity appearance at a convention. Before he left, he posted that he was burning copies of the "unofficial Deathtroopers soundtrack" to give away as promotional swag (since details of the novel are still a closely-guarded secret). That's a pretty common practice to encourage visitors to stop by the booth. People were asking about it in the comments on the previous post, so Joe re-posted the playlist for the curious.
So that's what the one has to do with the other. But sure, yeah, he's trying to plug his book. Is that a surprise?
Robert - I DID finish Coraline and loved it. I'm trying to figure out whether the movie's okay for my seven-year-old.
Harold - Unfortunately, no, but wouldn't that be cool?
Blackout - Hope you dig it as much as I do.
OKR - Basically, it's for fun, like everything else.
